He met her at a party. She was so outstanding, with many boys around her, while he was so normal, with nobody paying attention to him.
At the end of the party,he invited her to have coffee with him. She was surprised, but due to being polite, she agreed.
They sat in a nice coffee shop. He was too nervous to say anything, and she felt uncomfortable, thinking,“Please let me go home.”
Suddenly he asked the waiter,“Would you please give me some salt?I’d like to put it in my coffee.”
Everybody stared at him—so strange! His face turned red, but, still,he put the salt in his coffee and drank it.
She asked him curiously,“Why do you have this hobby?”
He replied,“When I was a little boy,I was living near the sea. I liked playing in the sea,and I could feel the taste of the sea, just like the taste of the salty coffee. Now every time I have the salty coffee,I always think of my childhood. I miss my hometown so much. I miss my parents who are still living there.”
While saying that tears filled his eyes. She was deeply touched. That’s his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart. A man who can tell out his homesickness,he must be a man who loves home, cares about home, and has responsibility of home.
Then she also started to speak about her faraway hometown, her childhood, and her family. That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story.
They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who meets all her demands;he was kindhearted, warm and careful. He was such a good person but she almost missed him!
Thanks to his salty coffee! Then the story was just like every beautiful love story—the princess married the prince, and then they were living a happy life...And,every time she made coffee for him,she put some salt in the coffee.
After 40 years,he passed away, leaving her a letter which said,“My dearest, please forgive my whole life lie. This was the only lie I said to you—the salty coffee.
“Remember the first time we dated?I was so nervous at that time. Actually I wanted some sugar, but I said salt. It was hard for me to change so I just went ahead.
“I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid to do that,as I have promised not to lie to you for anything.
“Now I’m dying. I’m afraid of nothing so I tell you the truth:I don’t like the salty coffee. What a strange bad taste! But I have had the salty coffee for my whole life!
“Since I knew you,I never feel sorry for anything I do for you. Having you with me is my biggest happiness for my whole life. If I can live for a second time,I still want to know you and have you for my whole life, even though I have to drink the salty coffee again.”
Her tears made the letter totally wet.
Someday, someone asked her,“What’s the taste of salty coffee?”“It’s sweet,” she replied.

As societies develop, their members start to see things not so much according to what they need, but according to what they want. When people have enough money, these wants become demands.
Now, it' s important for the managers in a company to understand what their customers want if they are going to develop effective marketing strategies (策略). There are various ways of doing this. One way at supermarkets ( 超市), for example, is to interview(采访) customers while they're doing their shopping. They can be asked what they prefer to buy and then the results of the research can be studied. This provides information on which to base future marketing strategies. It' s also quite normal for top managers from department stores to spend a day or two each month visiting stores and mixing freely with the public, as if they were ordinary customers, to get an idea of how customers act.
Another way to get information from customers is to give them something. For example, some fast food restaurants give away tickets in magazines or on the street that permit customers to get part of their meal for nothing. As well as being a good way of attracting customers into the restaurants to spend their money, it also allows the managers to get a feel for where to attract customers and which age-groups to attract.
Another strategy used at some well-known parks such as Disneyland is for top managers to spend at least one day in their work, touting the park dressed as Mickey Mouse or something like that. This provides them with a perfect chance to examine the scene and watch the customers without being noticed.
64. The text is designed for _______.
A. managers B. salesmen C. researchers D. customers
D
Compared to the whole development of history, your life could be like a candle which is lit and then blown out immediately. In a word, life is short —very short. Missing any of the joys life offers is terrible.
So don’t let fears conquer your short and valuable life. If your life is being controlled by your fears, you are most certainly cheating yourself. Courage is the mental (精神上的) muscle that conquers fear. Like all muscles, the more you use it, the stronger it will become. Courage is not something you are born with, that is to say, it must be developed. It has been said that if you face the thing you fear bravely, your fear will leave you.
For years I believed that courageous people had no fear. I was wrong. Eddie Richenbacher put it very well when he said, "There is no courage without fear." We all have fears; however, not everyone gives in to their fears easily.
There is, very likely, something you have wanted to do for years —move to another city, start your own business, apply for (申请) a better position, or go wherever you like. Whatever it is, you should do it. Remember, life is not a practice run. This is it. A little courage leads to more.
Observe those poor people who have no courage. They only tiptoe (蹑手蹑脚地走) through life, hoping they can make it safely to death. You and I never meant to live that way. Learn to live the way you like by no longer living as you dislike. Make good use of your day and have courage. That’s living!

B. is valuable and people should take good care of themselves

70. We can learn from the passage that courage ________.
A. can be developed quickly B. needs to be used more often
C. is formed when one is born D. makes one very excited
71. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Person’s Life Is Short B. Don’t Fear Anything C. Don’t Give up D. Courage Conquers Fear

American English consists of all kinds of English spoken in the United States. Although all Americans do not speak the same way, their speech has a lot in common. American English has grown up with the country. It began to separate from British English during its colonial (殖民地的) beginnings. Then it acquired its national feature during the settlement of the continent. Today it is the medium by which American culture is transmitted (传播,传递)to the world. It influences other languages and other varieties of English.
All speakers of English share a common linguistic (语言学上的) system and a basic set of words. However, American English differs from British English, Australian English, and other varieties in much of its pronunciation and vocabulary as well as its spelling and grammatical (语法的) constructions.
In broad terms, Canadian and American speakers tend to sound like one another; but they tend to sound different from a large group of English speakers who sound more British, such as those in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. For example, most Canadians and Americans pronounce an "r" sound after the vowel (元音)in words like "car" and "farther", while speakers from the British English group do not. Also, some British English speakers drop "h" sounds at the beginning of words, so that "he" and "his" are pronounced as if they were spelled "e" and "is". The English spoken in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa sounds more like British English than American English does. This is because these varieties have had less time to separate from British English.
72. We can know from the first paragraph that American English _________.

75. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The differences between British and American English.

C. The development of the English language.
D. The development of American English.
