The American Revolution was a citizen's revolution. Ordinary men took a large part in it. One of them was Paul Revere, a silver worker. He lived in Boston many years ago during the time when many people in the British colonies in America felt that they were being used for Britain's gain. They felt that they were being taxed without fair representation in the British government. The people of Boston were especially angry, and additional British troops had been sent there to keep the excited colonists under control. Paul Revere was one of those who believed that the British would soon be on the march against the villages and farms near Boston.?
On the night of the eighteenth of April,1775,Revere rowed across the Charles River to a place opposite Boston where his saddled horse was ready to ride. if the British soldiers came, he was to ride to warn the people. A friend in Boston was hidden near the British troops in a place where he could watch what they did. If they marched by land, he was to hang one Lantern high in the tower of the old North Church in Boston where Paul could see it. If they came by sea, he would hang up two lanterns.
Toward morning Revere saw two lights in the tower. The British must be coming by sea! He jumped on his horse and rode through the countryside before dawn in order to warn the farmers and villagers that they must fight at daybreak. he rode all night, and in the morning, by the time the troops arrived, the farmers were hidden all along the roads with their guns loaded. Liberia, the oldest independent Negro state in West Africa, has been struggling for survival ever since its foundation in 1822. Progress has been hampered( 妨碍) by constant hostility between the American Negroes whose families returned there in the early 19th century, and the West Africans whose ancestors never left the continent. Though the two groups are of the same race, they are divided by language and outlook and regard each other with deep suspicion(怀疑) creating a conflict which was not foreseen by Liberia's founders.
In addition, neighboring states, native tribes, disease, and poverty have made life dangerous and difficult. The government has tried desperately, through loans and a trickle of trade, to make ends meet. Anxiety about financial matters lessened somewhat when, in 1910, the United States accepted responsibility for Liberia's survival. However, not until Harvey Firestone, the American rubber king, decided that the United States must produce its own rubber----with Liberia as the site of the rubber plantations----did Liberia have much hope of paying its debts and balancing its budget.
The rubber industry, founded in the 1920's ,and the activity that followed it brought both progress and profit to Liberia. Before that time Liberia had no roads, no mechanical transport and no good port; its people had little education and few tools. Liberians feel that the country is being ruled by rubber. For this reason, the recent discovery of iron ore(铁矿石) is important. Liberian leaders are trying to moderate the power of the rubber industry and to establish the country's political and economic independence.

Due to climate change, Arctic ice is breaking up earlier in the spring, and its area is decreasing. This is creating problems for polar bears that make their homes off northern Alaska and in Hudson Bay.
Polar bears off Alaska normally hunt and raise their young on ice sheets that float on the ocean. But as the ice has melted, the polar bears have been forced to spend more time on land. There, they have begun to frequent beaches, feeding on the remains of whales caught by native hunters. For polar bears, this food is less nutritious than seals that they normally catch on ice sheets. The shrinking(减少) ice has also forced more polar bears into the ocean. In the past, they only had to swim short distances between ice sheets. But as the ice has shrunk, polar bears have been forced to swim longer and longer distances in the open ocean. This poses a severe danger during rough weather, and an increasing number of drowned polar bears have been observed.
In Hudson Bay, the ice breaks up three weeks earlier in the spring now than it did 20 years ago. Polar bears on Hudson Bay fast(绝食) during the summer, waiting for ice to form in the fall to hunt. Every year, the summer gets longer, and the bears get skinnier. Over the past 25 years, the average weight of the female bears has dropped 68 kg. This loss affects their ability to reproduce, and already the number of births has dropped 15 percent. Unless the bears can learn to survive these climate changes, these giants of the ice may one day disappear.
51. What is Arctic ice doing earlier each year?
A. It’s freezing. B. It’s hardening. C. It’s melting. D. It’s expanding.
52. What is true of polar bears that are spending more time on land in Alaska?
A. Their young are dying. B. Their diet is changing.
C. Their health is improving. D. Their families are growing.
53. What do polar bears in Hudson Bay do during the summer?[
A. They claim territory(地域). B. They protect mates.
C. They hunt animals. D. They stop feeding
54. What does the writer imply about female polar bears in Hudson Bay ?
A. They are having fewer young now. B. They suffer from various sicknesses.
C. They don’t need stronger protection. D. They can’t find enough good males.
55. In which publication would you most likely find this passage?
A. Medical News B. Society Today C. Wildlife Journal D. Design Magazine
第二节:信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。请把选择出的答案填写在答题卷相应的位置上。
A.Current situation and future of reality shows
B.Audience’s reaction to reality TV
C.Critics’ relevant comments
D.Attractions for producers and participants
E.Definition of “watch and dial ”show
F.Introduction to new reality shows
56.
European television had the idea of taking ordinary people and turning them into “stars ”by putting them in unusual situation .”Big Brother”(created in Holland )was one of the first. A group of people were locked in a small house with cameras running 24 hours a day .It was called a “watch and dial ”show because viewers vote by telephone to decide who should leave or stay.
57.
“Big Brother” was probably the fist of the new reality shows, but such a programme has developed. Many have found appeal by having a theme to them, but most are based on the principle of “survival of the fittest ”by eliminating participants as the series progresses .So we have the dating shows where winners either pair off or stay true to their partners outside the TV studio .Then there are those that test people’s abilities for specific jobs like running a kitchen, becoming an interior designer or a top model .
58.
Critics say these programmes are basically bad television, but people watch them. So why are there so many of them? For the viewer it’s an opportunity to “people watch”. It’s natural to like watching other people. They’re interesting. We can imagine what we would do in that situation. We get to know the characters and see them grow and develop week after week. And of course, television is the perfect place to watch people. Like the theatre or cinema we can look at other people and they can’t look back .But with television, we can watch in the privacy of our own homes, We watch, but we don’t have to admit it to anyone .
59.
The TV companies like reality shows because they are cheap to produce and attract younger viewers, which advertisers like. The last “Big Brother” in Britain attracted enormous advertising revenue. They aren’t dependent on “star” actors with enormous salaries. And your actors won’t go on strike. And why do people participate in them ?Well ,for fame and money of course. In the past ,appearing on television wasn’t for ordinary people. You had to be good at something ,like sport, or reading the news, or acting .But not any more
60.
It seems that most shows do well at the beginning but then the viewing figures begin to fall .And it varies from country to country too. For example ,one show had an adopted child try to guess the identity of her real father, and another had a family arguing over an inheritance .Both were cancelled after one episode. Perhaps the novelty has worn off. Certainly, reality TV seems to appeal much more to the younger audience. And now there are so many shows around even the young have become more critical. Reality show will probably survive—it’s just no longer so easy to make a successful one .

As science developed rapidly in the direction of technology, it supplies man a better and more comfortable life. Men will be working shorter and shorter hours, while housewives will also be able to have more free time. Can you imagine doing housework without a housewife? Scientists believe this will be turned into realities in not very long time, and perhaps during your lifetime house-robots will take the place of housewives.
When I discussed this kind of machine with housewives, some 90 percent of them replied immediately, “How soon can I buy one?” The other 10 percent said, “I would be terrified to see it moving about my house.” But when I explained to them that it could be turned off or stopped, they quickly realized that it is a useful object.
In my own home we have found that the washing-up machine is regarded as a good hand in the room. There’s no greater pleasure than to go to bed in the evening and know that the washing-up is being done downstairs after we are asleep.
Some families would like to have their robot slaves doing all the downstairs housework after they were in bed at night, while others would have it done in the mornings. But this would be entirely a matter of choice.

第二节:16. September 17. kick off 18. straw rope 19. next to 20. Canadians
任务型:
Will house-robots replace housewives?
Scientists believe that the house-robots will replace housewives in the future with the rapid development of science so that housewives will be freed from daily boring housework and enjoy a better life.
I agree with the author to a large measure. I consider that the use of robots means the social development of science and technology because robots can free people from such dull housework. What’s more, some high-intelligence robots can be designed to take care of the family remembers, such as babies and elderly ones as well. However, it is still too expensive to use the machine nowadays, which will cost a lot to repair it when it is out of order. Furthermore, the machine moves slowly, unable to communicate with people in a real sense. Not every family can afford a high-intelligence robot.
In brief, robots are useful for our families. But it should be built like humans, and it should not be too expensive. I think it will take quite a long time to actually bring the house-robots into our families.
