There is also the added 47 of being obliged to spend your holiday with a group of people you have never met before, may not like and have no 48 excuse for getting away from. As against this, it can be 49 that for many people, particularly the lonely or elderly, the feeling of belonging to a group, for a short period on holiday, is an additional benefit. They can sit safely back in their seats and watch the world go by.

In July 1994 Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was struck by 21 pieces of a comet(慧星). When the fragments(碎片) landed in the southern part of the giant planet, the explosions were watched by scientists here on earth. But what if our own planet was hit by a comet?
The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two fragments will probably hit the southern part of the Earth. The news has caused panic.
On 17 July, a fragment four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere with a huge explosion. About half of the fragment is destroyed. But the major part survives and hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and an enormous wave is created and spreads. The wall of water rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometres an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. The wave moves into the Indian Ocean and heads towards Asia.
Millions of people are already dead in the southern part of the Earth, but the north won’t escape for long. Tons of broken pieces are thrown into the atmosphere by the explosions. As the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later civilization has collapsed. No more than 10 million people have survived.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Mary scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a space fragment. The dinosaurs couldn’t survive in the cold climate that followed and they became extinct. Will we meet the same end?
Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the author’s description of the disaster in 2094?
The whole world becomes extremely cold.
All the coastal cities in Africa are destroyed.
The whole mankind becomes extinct.
The visit of the comet results in wars.
Why does the author mention dinosaurs at the end of the passage?
Because they could only live in the warm climate.
Because they once dominated the earth.
Because their extinction indicates future disasters.
Because dinosaurs and humans never live in the same age.
In writing the passage, the author intends to ______.
give an accurate description of the possible disaster in the future
prove that humans will sooner or later be destroyed
tell the historical development of the Earth
warn of a possible disaster in the future
It can be concluded that the passage is most probably part of a(n) ______.
A. horror story B. news report
C. research paper D. article of popular science
C
The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled, pain free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness, if fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, self-improvement.
Ask a bachelor (单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three-day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because ______.
he is reluctant to take on family responsibilities
he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single
he finds more fun in dating than in marriage
he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement
Raising children, in the author’s opinion, is ______.
A. a moral duty B. a thankless job
C. a rewarding task D. a source of inevitable pain
To understand what true happiness is one must ______.
have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetime
make every effort to liberate oneself from pain
put up with pain under all circumstances
be able to distinguish happiness from fun
What is the author trying to tell us?
A. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.B. One must know how to attain happiness.
C. It is important to make commitments. D. It is pain that leads to happiness.
Section C
Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
A.Classroom participation
B.Differences in American university education
C.Examination system
D.Competition among students
E.Honest policy in students’ school work
F.Students’ responsibility for learning
76.
There is considerable variety in university classroom in the United States. Because of diverse teaching methods and non-standardized curricula, no two courses are the same. Undergraduate courses are considerable different from graduate courses. The classroom atmosphere in expensive, private universities may differ from that in community colleges which are free and open to everyone.
77.
Participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student’s oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role (i.e., listening and taking notes), many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions, and informal lectures.
78.
Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the student. If a long reading assignment is given, instructor expects students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. (Courses are not designed merely for students to pass exams.) The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades.
79.
Ideally, the teacher-student relationship at universities is characterized by trust. The honor system, put forward by the teacher and the university demands that the student be honest in all areas of school work. Thus , cheating on tests, plagiarizing (抄袭) in written work, presenting other’s ideas as original, and turning in homework completed by someone else are all prohibited.
80.
Relationships between students in the classroom can be cooperative or competitive. International students should not hesitate to ask for help if it is needed. There are courses, however, where grades are calculated in relation to other student’s scores. Therefore, in classes where such a grading curve is used, students may be reluctant to share lecture notes or information for fear that their own grades will suffer.
Section D
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions and complete the statements in the no more than 10 words.
“Soon, you’re going to have to move out!” cried my neighbor upon seeing the largest tomato plant known to mankind or at least known in my neighborhood.
One tiny 9-inch plant, bought for $1.25 in the spring, has already taken over much of my rose bed, covering much of other plants, and is well on its way to the front door.
Roses require a good deal of care, and if it weren’t for the pleasure they give, it wouldn’t be worth the work. As it is, I have a garden full of sweet-smelling roses for most of the year. Bushes must be pruned (剪枝) in early spring, leaving ugly woody branches until the new growth appears a few weeks later. It was the space available in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomato plant. A big mistake.
Soil conditions made just perfect for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes. The daily watering coupled with full sun and regular fertilizing have turned the little plant into a tall bush. The cage I placed around it as the plant grew has long since disappeared under the thick leaves.
Now the task I face in harvesting the fruit is twofold: First, I have to find the red ones among the leaves, which means I almost have to stand on my head, and once found I have to reach down and under, pick the tomatoes and withdraw my full fist without dropping the prize so dearly won. I found two full-blown white roses completely hidden as I picked tomatoes in June, but they were weak and the leaves already yellow for lack of light.
Here I am faced with a painful small decision: To tear up a wonderful and productive tomato plant that offers up between ten and twenty ripe sweet tomatoes each day or say goodbye to several expensive and treasured roses. Like Scarlett in Gone With the Wind, I’ll think about that tomorrow.
What are the requirements for the healthy growth of roses?
The writer planted the tomato because ___________________________________________.
By saying “the prize so dearly won” in paragraph 5, the writer wants to _________________.
What is the painful choice the writer is faced with?

Importance of Family Education
Parents often show love for us, supervise us to be a responsible person and encourage us to create a promising future, yet we can’t deny the fact that our friends always exert a subtle influence on us . It’s really hard to say which of the two is more important, for they affect us at different times and in respective ways. However, from my point of view, friends’ influence plays the dominant role.
To start with, most of our friends have their own talents in a certain field, from which we can learn to make up for our weaknesses . Moreover, since our friends are from different families, we can have the opportunity to share different lifestyles ,and perfect our own living habits. Furthermore, our peers undoubtedly know more about the latest trend, and accordingly, it is our friends that help us keep pace with the times. Last but not least, our parents will leave us sooner or later. By contrast, friends’ effect will last much longer due to the fact that we will make more and more friends on the life road.
